The name ‘BOWER’ is derived from the characteristic feature of a trellised walkway commonly designed in early 19th century gardens. Dating back to Bienville’s founding of New Orleans, the area between Canal Street and Felicity (now the Lower Garden District neighborhood) was retained for vegetable gardens. As the Lower Garden District developed, urban gardens remained a common feature, albeit smaller and more of a reverence to earlier heritage.
